Searching For Boss Badger
The records I have come across on this abandoned mine give a discovery date of 1899 and it seems that most - if not all - mining work was done in the early 1900s. As I mentioned in the video, this was primarily a copper mine (hence the recent interest and activity as evidenced by all of the survey work). However, as one could likely infer from the glimpses of the highly mineralized zones that the miners worked, there are a number of other minerals present that were mined as well. Specifically, these were zinc and lead with a smattering of gold, platinum and silver thrown in as well.
My assumption is that the carbide “badger graffiti” was a joke by the miners... However, the times in my life when I have seen badgers in the wild have always been in the desert and one of those times was next to an abandoned mine.

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.
I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Bringing An Abandoned Gold Mine Back To Life: Part 25 - Final

Sure, we’ve been inside of mines that no one has laid eyes on for more than a century, but this one had an extra level of satisfaction given the amount of work needed to open it up. Even a really dedicated mine explorer couldn’t have done it - it required an industrial-level effort and a committed crew to clear through the hundreds of feet of caved workings in this mine. Although we did not ach...

This is almost certainly our last video on this epic mine complex. That’s a bittersweet feeling after several years and many visits of mine exploring on this one as we would love to have continued pushing deeper underground. However, at the same time, there is a certain satisfaction in completing such an ambitious project in this this incredible abandoned mine. Graham of the Mines of the West c...

Well, we ran this one out as much as we could… It was our hope to be able to connect to some of the other large mines in the district as the old maps show the entire complex of mines connecting underground. However, all of the connections were regrettably caved. Nevertheless, this unexplored section of the mine was quite enjoyable and to obtain the footage that you saw in this series required a...

In this video, we run out this great, unexplored level and start on the next level down, which turned out to be just as rewarding… The unexplored section of this mine definitely earned it a spot on my “Favorite Abandoned Mines” list. Given how damp and humid this mine was, I am very grateful that so many artifacts were preserved as well as they were. Most of the wood was a mess, but metal, pape...

What you can see in this video of this abandoned mine should make it pretty clear why we love these unexplored mines so much… Aside from the majesty of seeing something that no other living human being has laid eyes upon, it is amazing to have the “time machine experience” of seeing everything exactly as it was when the last miner walked away a century or more ago. It is fascinating to see what...

This abandoned mine dates back to the 1800s and silver, lead, copper and zinc ore was pulled out of this complex of mines... Several large, abandoned mines connect underground at this site, but the others are totally inaccessible from the surface. The mine we entered from will likely not be accessible for much longer either. We knew that the lower levels of the mine that we entered from were un...

Every report that we read stated that this gold mine had closed down and been abandoned in the early 1900s and that this bottom level was simply a drain adit that connected to the main shaft after running straight in for approximately one thousand feet. Our intent was to follow the drain tunnel to the shaft and see if we could come up the shaft from the bottom (the mine shaft was inclined rathe...

This is an abandoned gold mine that I have known about for many years due to its size and historical significance. However, it was an early one, with peak production in the 1800s and it had ceased operation not too far into the twentieth century. Many mines that shut down that long ago have only very limited and vague location information. One must follow clues in old reports and then get boots...

We’re still grinding away at our abandoned gold mine project. We very much appreciate the viewers that have continued to help make this possible with Patreon and through the direct donations on UA-cam itself. It was not our intention at the start, but we spent our entire day exploring the gold mine that hollowed out this mountain, wrapping our way down and around it… The lyrics for “She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain” came to mind on many an occasion! You see, it may not have been clear in the video, but we started at the top of the mountain, as that was our initial target based on old mine maps, ...

When we’re driven out of the highest reaches of the Sierra Nevadas by snow, we must normally content ourselves with international trips or desert trips (the odd winter trip to Alaska notwithstanding)… However, we recently started looking into an area in the lower parts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Feather River Canyon. We have flirted with the Feather River Canyon in the past (and act...

The incredible location of this mine in the pit (I would just love to see historical photos of the network of platforms and trestles that supported the gold mining operation) with the river smashing through the workings at the bottom distracted me from the mine itself. However, the abandoned gold mine was pretty incredible in its own right, even without its location taken into account… Come on,...

This area had burned over a year or two prior to our visit. That made the hike in to the abandoned mine easier as much of the brush had been cleared out. However, the fire also deleted any remaining structures right around the mine, which is unfortunate. Given what was still intact of that aerial tramway, there must have been a good amount of infrastructure present at one time to support it. An...

This mine is big and apparently very stable due to its lack of timbering. Maybe due to excessive traffic, artifacts are missing but the mine is an artifact all by itself. Thanks Justin and crew!

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but, no, that dynamite was not dangerous at all. It has a short shelf life and, having been there since 1922, and exposed to the annual flooding and damp from snowmelt could not have been more inert. If your life depended on it and you had every imaginable tool at your disposal, you could not get a reaction of any kind from that dynamite. Either way, I would still not have reported it though... That is irresponsible.

Reviewing some of these older videos, I noticed a spool of wire from Columbia Steel Company hanging on a stud. If I'm correct this is the same Columbia Steel out of Pittsburg CA, founded in 1913. Later it was bought by United States Steel, and after that became USS/POSCO (Pohang of South Korea), the leading manufacturer and supplier of cold rolled steel for most of the western US until it's closing earlier this year (2024). I worked there for 14 years. Over 100 years of Steel history

This must have been in operation until more recent times judging by some of the stuff left lying around - 70's 80's or even 90's. I can't believe a mine this modern and big wouldn't have not had blueprints of their workings on file with some agencies somewhere. Like Bearu of Mines or whatever.

What gets me is that there is so much stuff left untouched for over 100 years and it's still in working condition, so many items just left by people that maybe had no idea that the item wouldn't be seen or moved until long after they die from old age. It's so fascinating!

So what is the ownership status of these mines? Did the companies stop paying taxes or whatever and it forfeit to the state (Forest Service) years ago? They must have planned on opening it back up one day but gold prices stayed low and that was the that (and then they let it go for taxes or whatever).
